About the Micah Project
Working with our community to show the love of God; ensuring that children receive a nutritious breakfast every school morning.
In July 2016 we discovered that between 500 and 1200 children attending the local village school came to school daily with empty stomachs. Some of these children are orphans; many are from single-parent families or families where the parents are unemployed for different reasons. The children were in varying degrees of need for food for a wide range of reasons. Some had no other food provided for them in a day; others may have been in a better position, but most would benefit from additional food at the beginning of a day.
We approached the headmaster of the school, who described how these children would fall asleep in lessons, sometimes faint or have health problems related to their malnutrition. As Christian mothers of young children ourselves, we were so saddened by this situation. We decided to start a school feeding programme, with the involvement of the local community. We now provide a mug of maize and millet porridge at the start of each school day to all 1200 children. We employ 4 local, trustworthy ladies, who cook and serve the porridge. The headmaster has reported an increase in attendance, attention span and academic performance from the children, which we are delighted by!
